How High to Hang a Chandelier In Any Room In Your Home

A chandelier can be the focal point in any room. It shows elegance with ease, lighting up a space and giving many desired feels. Chandeliers come in various shapes, sizes, and aesthetics, being the perfect addition to any interior design! To create just the right atmosphere, deciding where to hang a chandelier is crucial. In particular, its a must to know just how high to hang a chandelier in your foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, or anywhere else in your home!

Choosing Just the Right Type of Chandelier

Before you worry about what height to hang your chandelier it's important to consider the many forms chandeliers come in. There are tiered, flush, minimalist, glamorous, statement, the option of using more than one, and oh the many materials—brass, glass, crystal, gemstones, the list goes on. Start browsing keeping the overall size of your room in mind. For the best diameter to aim for, add the room's length and width together in feet, then use that number as the chandelier's diameter in inches.

Tips on Deciding The Best Location & Height for Your Chandelier

Chandeliers are great for any space you want to add light and atmosphere to. From foyers, dining rooms, and living rooms to bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchens, the location of your chandelier will dictate the best height to hang it.

Some general rules to follow: Allow about 2-3 inches of chandelier length for each foot of your ceiling height. The 7-7 ½ foot rule is good to keep in mind as a general height guideline for any chandelier to ensure no one hits their head.

Foyer/Entryway

Within a foyer in a single story home, you should hang the chandelier 7 ½ feet from the floor, ensuring that the space still feels elegant and not clustered.

If you want to hang a chandelier within a two-story foyer, you should align the chandelier with the second floor. This is called the “top third” rule. You must divide the total ceiling height into three sections, and have the chandelier only occupy the top third.

If you are looking for a chandelier to dress up your foyer, the Nymph Chandelier or the Gatsby Suspension Chandelier would be perfect. These are a great height for a higher ceiling, most commonly being the foyer space. They are statement pieces, offering a delight to encounter each time you enter a home.

Dining Room & Kitchen

When hanging a chandelier in a kitchen or dining room, you will want the chandelier to be around 3 feet from the table top or counter top.

Be sure to consider how people stand up and sit down at the table or counter as well. If the chandelier is too close to where they rise they may hit their head while standing, even if the chandelier itself is centered over the table.

Living Room

If hung in an open space, like a living room, you will need to hang your chandelier at least 7 feet from the floor, keeping the space more open, but well lit. Consider the diameter of your light fixture when deciding the best height as well. A smaller chandelier may be better hung slightly lower, while a larger one may be better hung closer to the ceiling.

A great choice for a living room chandelier is the Outburst or the Eternity. These chandeliers specifically can be both eye catching, but classy. They give the light needed for a living room vibe, making it perfect for that area.

Bedroom

Within a bedroom, the chandelier should be hung again at least 7 feet from the floor. But, if you want a more open space, less cluttered feel, you can do 8 feet or higher. This all depends on what feel you want for your bedroom.

A bedroom is a great place for a focal point chandelier, or you can also add small drop pendant chandeliers over nightstands as well. Why not add a touch of elegance to the place you rest?

For a bedroom, we recommend going with something like the Metis Suspension lamp or the Hypnotic chandelier. These light fixtures are perfect for a bedroom due to their size, elegance, and statement style.

Bathroom

Within a bathroom, the chandelier should be hung at least 8 feet from the bathtubs rim. In addition to this rule, the chandelier should be only 3 feet away from the tub. This ensures a classy, elegant feel for your bathroom!
